Real life obligations can sometimes get in the way of my genealogy fun and my best intentions to post about my last day at RootsTech2018.

Almost a week late, but here I am today to show you my last day at RootsTech.

Lots of emotions and a bit overwhelming on the last day. Two, incredible opening presentation guests, Dr. Henry Gates, Jr. and Natalia LaFourcade started us off.

Natalia sang live, for the first time,  “Remember Me” from the Pixar film, Coco. The next night she would sing it live at the Academy Awards! So cool that we got to hear it live first. While many were expecting Dr. Gates to generate the most enthusiasm that morning, Natalia was so captivating and sweet, the audience fell in love with her instantly and gave her a standing ovation. She made a lot of us cry too!

Dr. Gates was a perfect keynote to end RootsTech, with his message about keeping our ancestors alive by not only researching them, but also sharing their stories. He recently had his own breakthrough with his second great grandmother. For years he had been searching for a version of her obituary he had seen when he was a child. It had described her  “an estimable woman.” He never forgot that. But he could never find that particular obit anywhere…until the previous week before RootsTech! Family history produces miracles sometimes.

I’ll be doing a wrap up of my time at RootsTech in an upcoming post, but for now, take a look at the highlights of my last day at RootsTech.
